The Brussels Town Hall is the main monumental building located at the center of Brussels on a luxurious square of Grand-Place.

With a pause, its building lasted for more than 50 years: from 1402 to 1455. That seems to be not a long period for such great construction. Despite the significant age, the majestic building overcame all the obstacles and even survived the bombardment of Brussels by the French army in 1695, though it was the main target.

Today it is the oldest Middle Ages construction that was preserved on the main city square. The town hall is a true pearl of the Brabant Gothic style with elegant arched openings, carved windows, numerous stucco sculptures and gargoyles. The building is crowned with a high 96-meter tower that points to the sky. Thanks to the tower, the building is perfectly seen from different parts of the city.

Small openwork turrets on the edges make the town hall look more like a fairy-tale palace from Disney cartoons, rather than a residence of the city mayor, especially in the evening when the building illumination is switched on.

At the top of the main tower, there is a glittering in the sun 5-meter high golden statue of Archangel Michael, the patron saint of Brussels, who fearlessly deals with the demon at his feet in the guise of a dragon.

Today you can enjoy the beauty of the town hall not only outside, but also inside. It is open for everyone at any time, except for the period of the city council meetings. The interior includes luxurious halls, amazing old tapestries, mirrors in gold-plated frames, as well as paintings and sculptures. Inside the town hall, excursions in three languages are organized. There is a special hall for wedding ceremonies.

Moreover, when you get to the town hall viewing platform, you can enjoy the view of the whole Grand-Place square. During the traditional festival “Flower Carpet” in August, a particularly spectacular angle opens up. On the building facade, there are flags of Belgium and the European Union.

In 1998, the town hall was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

There are other attractions of Brussels nearby: fountains “Manneken Pis” and “Jeanneke Pis,” the Royal Library of Belgium and the Brussels Stock Exchange.
