Burg Square crowns the magnificent city of Bruges and, along with the Markt (Market Square), is considered one of its main attractions. The square houses the city's administrative and historical center, which attracts tourists with its unique architecture.

This square is the start point of the history of Bruges, which is a real luxurious open-air museum itself. Take a hint: Burg means "fortress" in Dutch. Once Baldwin I, Count of Flanders, built a fortification as a defense against Norman raids: a castle with a fortified wall, which became the center of development of one of the most beautiful and important cities in Europe.

Later, in 900, the square had been adorned with the St. Donatian's Cathedral, which was unfortunately destroyed by the French several centuries ago. However, part of the wall and the foundation have survived to this day. Now they are integrated into the modern Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Although the square is small, it contains important historical sights of different architectural styles and eras. Moreover, the appearance of the square organically unites the magnificent examples of Renaissance, romantic, neoclassical, Gothic and Baroque architecture.

Burg Square also houses the impressive building of the City Hall. Its facade is decorated with 49 sculptures: copies of biblical statues and figures of historical Flemish personalities. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city, dating from the 14th century.

Another important attraction is the Catholic Basilica of the Holy Blood. It keeps an important Christian relic: a piece of cloth, which, according to legend, was used to wipe the blood of Jesus after he had been taken down from the cross.

Walking around Bruges, you cannot miss Burg Square: it is only 100 meters from the central Markt (Market Square) and is never empty. It is a place where hotels and cozy street cafes are placed, excursions are held, holidays and festivals are organized. Long story short, life is always in full swing there.

The square is close to the Fish Market, the Museum of Medieval Torture, the Quay of the Rosary, the Salvador Dali Museum, and the Fries Museum.
