Just two kilometers from the city of Mogilev, there is an incredibly picturesque place with a real traditional Belarusian village. It is a perfect place to learn and understand the history and culture of this cheerful and genuine nation. Actually, this is not an ordinary village but a stylized open-air ethnographic museum, where one can get acquainted with the life, traditions, and crafts of Belarusians, as well as take part in local ceremonies and rituals from the 19th century.
The museum was opened in 2006, combining the Korchma cultural and entertainment complex and the Artisans' Town.
The Korchma complex is a large building in the gentry style, which houses a manor house and a traditional tavern. The manor house provides comfortable rooms and European service. You can stay there playing billiards and taking a steam bath, and then go to the Korchma tavern and enjoy the dishes of the national Belarusian cuisine: potato pancakes, dumplings with meat filling, fish jelly, and a famous local strong drink, horilka.
The Artisans' Town comprises peasant huts, craft workshops, and souvenir shops. Visitors not only watch how the craftsmen work but also actively join them. So there is a unique opportunity to create original souvenirs in the best traditions of the 19th century.
A potter shows various pottery techniques ranging from firing and smoking to glazing clay; a weaver – how to weave from sheep's wool, linen, and hemp fibers; a carpenter – how to make linden and alder household utensils. And a blacksmith helps visitors forge a souvenir using an anvil.
After the workshops, it's time to visit a moonshiner to try the traditional 55 percent alcohol drink and then come to a nearby bakery to eat fresh bread while singing a good old Belarusian song.
