Austria is a very athletic country, and the interests of its residents are not only focused on winter sports. Football is one of the favorite national amusements, and Wolfsberg football club is one of the favorite clubs.
It was founded in 1931 by Adolf Ptashkovsky, Karl Weber, Hermann Mayerhofer, Franz Hafner and Michael Schleicher. For a long time, the club didn`t know the joy of winning, staying in the lower leagues. The first real success came to the club in 1968, when they broke into the Austrian Regional Bundesliga, which was the second most important league in the country at that time. Football players played in it for 17 years. A small break occurred only in the 77-78 season when the team was withdrawn from the league. Wolfsberg has established itself as an average team. However, it gathered a lot of fans.
The following years were difficult for the club. First, it was withdrawn from the league in 1984-85. Then in 1988-89 and 1990-91 it returned to the Austrian Regional Bundesliga but was leaving it with unenviable consistency.
Having decided that since it is not possible to play in the second-best league, it is necessary to revive the third Regional Bundesliga. The players were among the first to play in it. Wolfsburg was holding a confident leadership position for several years. Unfortunately, something went wrong. And in 2001-2002, Wolfsberg left the top League #3.
"What pain, what pain" - the fans sang, tearing off their caps in a rage. They believed that victory would come. And it came!
In 2007, Wolfsberg and FC St. Andra decided to form a partnership. The union was so successful that in 2010 the players were promoted to the First League, and at the end of the 2011-12 season, to the Bundesliga.
At this point, the successful union ceased to exist, and many football fans still wonder – was it a good idea? After all, as soon as Wolfsberg went its own way, it started to lose again. It got to the point that after another defeat, the team's head coach, Nenad Bjelica, left his post. He was replaced by Slobodan Grubor. But due to poor results, Slobodan Grubor was also dismissed and his place was taken Dietmar Kühbauer. He started training the team with special diligence and will surely lead it to victory.
Today, the football club is based at Lavanttal-Arena, where all training sessions and home matches take place.
