To realize the power and greatness of the Habsburg family, which ruled Austria for almost a thousand years, go to the Hofburg. Previously, it was a winter residence and the main seat of the Vienna Imperial Court. Today, it has become the official residence of the Austrian president and home to numerous museums.

The Hofburg is placed in the historic part of Vienna. It is a grandiose architectural complex consisting of 19 palaces and nearly two dozen other buildings, 2,600 rooms and halls. Its construction began in the 13th century and ended only at the beginning of the 20th century. The construction of the Hofburg would have continued to this day if not for the outbreak of the First World War. Indeed, almost every ruler of the Habsburg dynasty expanded and rebuilt the Hofburg. So do not be surprised by the coexistence of several historical eras and various architectural styles: ranging from Renaissance and Baroque to Gothic and Empire.

The Hofburg has many attractions worth seeing. To get a full picture, visit at least three of them.

Firstly, explore the exposition of the Sisi Museum to found out everything about the personality of the legendary empress, known as Elisabeth of Austria, and about her marvelous life and fate. The museum displays portraits, her personal belongings, reconstructions of her outfits, and much more.

Secondly, come to the imperial chambers. Exploring the bedrooms and living rooms that recreate authentic historic interiors is like paying a visit to the famous Austrian rulers.

Thirdly, visit the Silver Chamber. The Imperial Silver Collection gives an idea of the luxury and culture of the court dinners. The Vermeil gilded service for 140 people says a lot.

After exploring the architecture and exhibits of the Hofburg, relax in nature in the parks of Burggarten and Volksgarten that surround the complex on two sides.
