Fortress Styraburg appeared in this place back in the 10th century. Its first mentions were found in written sources of 985. The fortress gave the name to this Austrian city, Steyr. Till 1079, the fortress had been owned by an ancient county family. After that, for more than 100 years, it had served as a residence of Ottokar II. Then the property was passed on to the Babenberg dynasty. They ruled these lands till the time when their dynasty ceased to exist. The inheritance passed to the great dynasty of Habsburg. Since the first day of its foundation and during many years, the strong stone fortress had been a desirable fortification for all the ruling dynasties, thanks to its good location at the intersection of important trade and transport routes. Besides, the Steyr river was its natural protection and the barrier to opponents. This increased its importance.
In 1666, according to the order of King Leopold I, those lands were transferred to graph Lamberg, and the Styraburg fortress was renamed; it became the Lamberg castle. It became the most influential castle in Upper Austria. At the same time, in the inner yard, a fountain was built with a sculpture of a dog, which is the heraldic animal of the Lamberg dynasty. Later the castle suffered many times due to numerous wars and fires, but every time it was restored, becoming even more beautiful. For example, a viewing platform on its Roman tower was made. The platform is surrounded by battlements as a result of the reconstruction after a city fire in 1824.
Nowadays, the Lamberg castle is a great example of Barocco style with an English park ensemble. Only Gothic pointed arches and a Roman tower remind of the first stone fortress Styraburg. In 1980, to the well-preserved fountain of the 17th century, there were added 12 figures of dwarfs, which were made out of sandstone and four figures that symbolize seasons in the castle park.
