The small old town of Spittal an der Drau is world-known not only for the place of origin of the biggest construction concern of Europe but also for a majestic Middle Ages castle. By the way, it can easily compete with the Strabag company by popularity, as there are lots of incredible legends about it.

The construction of the castle started in 1533, according to the order of Count Gabriel von Salamanca-Ortenburg, and lasted more than 60 years. Unfortunately, the count did not survive to the moment when all the works were finished. So the luxurious palace, made in Renaissance style, became his last gift to the heirs. The first Italian palazzo – beyond Italy – appeared in Austria. From the fascinating facade to the inner yard with arcades and columns – everything looks like the mansions of the 15th-18th centuries, which are characteristic for sunny Italy.

In 1620, after the death of the last heir of Gabriel von Salamanca-Ortenburg, all his property was owned by the Widmann family, who sold the amazing castle to the Italian aristocracy of an ancient Porcia dynasty. It was when the castle got the name Porcia, and the entrance to the inner yard was decorated with the family coat of arms, created by a famous artist named Kilian Pittner. The golden heraldic lily, a symbol of power and recognition, adorns this entrance even today.

At the end of the 18th century, the town of Spittal an der Drau suffered from a great fire which also affected the castle. However, fortunately for future generations, almost all the interiors were restored. In the 19th century, the castle was surrounded by an amazing park ensemble. Successors of the Porcia dynasty lived there till 1918. Then they sold it to Baron Klinger von Klingerstorff, and after 30 years the castle became state property.

Today, Porcia Castle hosts various public events. On the second floor, one of the biggest museums of the Alps – Folklore Museum – has placed its collections. In this place, you can learn a lot about the everyday life and traditions of the indigenous residents of the city. In the basement, there is an art gallery, and theatrical performances are organized on the palace stage.
