All the main attractions of this lovely provincial town are located in one square. You can get around interesting places in just a day. One of them can rightfully be considered the Sankt Pölten Cathedral. It is located just 400 meters from the town hall square.

The history of its creation dates back to the 8th century when Benedictine monks brought the relics of Saint Hippolytus to the city. It was also decided to establish a monastery in honor of the great Martyr. Now it is the oldest monastery in Austria. Later, the city itself started to be called as the monastery.

Around 1150, an early Romanesque three-nave Basilica without a transept was built. The prominent part of the basilica was two square towers on the facade on the west side.

Unfortunately, that historical building has not survived to this day, having burned down in a fire in the second half of the 13th century. It was restored in a different, Gothic style. And it was consecrated in honor of the ascension of Mary. However, this structure was not destined to survive for many centuries, because another fire in 1512 destroyed the Northern part of the church. After such an accident, it was decided not to restore it, but to disassemble it completely.

The third time the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century. Now you can admire the magnificent ceiling paintings made by Italian and Austrian masters. The church only became more beautiful and spectacular with each change made. The exterior simplicity of the facade hides real treasures: frescoes, paintings, interior decoration.

In 1784, a papal bull established an Episcopal see here, and the Church acquired the status of a cathedral. It is surrounded by monastic buildings on all sides. The spacious courtyard houses the museum of the Diocese, the Bishop's residence, connected to the cathedral by a special passage, as well as other economic premises.

The temple is a popular destination for pilgrims from all over the world. And tourists are happy to visit the cathedral to feel the historical spirit of this place.
