This building can be called one of the most important attractions of St Pölten. The exterior of the Institute can easily compete with the most famous palaces in Austria. You can see it walking along the picturesque square in front of the city hall.
The building of the Institute is designed in a Baroque style that accurately conveys the spirit of those times. The pale pink facade, decorated with columns and sculptures, is magnificent.
This masterpiece was created by the Baroque architect Jacob Prandtauer in the 18th century. Originally, a girls' school for aristocrats was based here and it belonged to a religious order. It was founded by a Catholic nun from England, Mary Ward. She carried to the masses its noble mission, fighting for women to have the opportunity to get an education on an equal basis with men.
Over the years, the building has been rebuilt and expanded several times. However, the building has not lost its Baroque appearance. On the facade, there are relief pilasters, and in the niches, there are statues of various saints. This is especially beautiful when the building of the Institute is falling sunlight. Statues flash under its rays as if they were consecrated by a blessed fire. The entrance arches are elegantly framed with beautiful decorative figures of Atlantean angels.
The Institute has a chapel, which is no less interesting for detailed consideration. It is decorated with frescoes depicting historical scenes from the life of the apostles, the Virgin Mary and Christ. The authors of the frescoes were unique artists of the Baroque period Bartolomeo Altomonte and Paul Troger.
Today, the building "English maidens" is the main building of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Students receive a very high level of education, so young people from all over the country are eager to enroll there. The University provides education based on strong religious traditions.
Of course, today students of both sexes are studying there, and the past of the Institution as a purely female one remains exclusively in the memories.
