When you start your travel across the astonishing European country of Austria, you do not need to plan itineraries and mark desirable touristic destinations in them. In every city, there are hundreds of places where you can stay for a day or the whole week, listen to “Aida” in the Vienna State Opera, attend mass in the St. Stephen’s Cathedral or just take a walk across the famous street of Ringstrasse. You can also take a backpack and go to less tourist crowded places, since only there, in the narrow streets of small old cities, you can get the true feeling of that magical spirit of the country and understand everyday life and traditions of its fascinating people.

The city of Feldkirchen in Kärnten, whose Middle Ages appearance with cobbled streets and stone castles, modest churches and stunning natural landscapes has been almost fully preserved, is exactly that kind of an attractive place. In this city, there are many architectural monuments, among which is the oldest building of Feldkirchen in Kärnten, Basilica of Saint Mary, which was constructed in the XI century, as well as the no less beautiful building of the city hall.

However, the very heart of the city is considered a small city square whose sonorous name is Hauptplatz. The whole area is surrounded by the perfectly preserved buildings of the XVIII-XIX centuries, which makes an impression that time stopped there, and now it is not the XXI century. The buildings of the town hall, post offices and pharmacies of the classical style with decorative baroque elements are worth special attention. The central place is taken by a fountain of the XIX century, made of white marble with a column of Holy Trinity in the middle. Such columns were built all over Europe as a gesture of gratitude for preventing the plague that claimed the lives of entire cities. Among people, these historical monuments got the name “Plague Columns.”

Fortunately, the time of plague is long gone, and today citizens and guests of Feldkirchen in Kärnten gather in this place only for joyful events, one of which is an annual local festival of folk music.
