Castles, Fortresses, Towers

In northern Austria, hidden in the thick of the woods, there is the Forchtenstein Castle. Its strong walls proudly rise above the neighboring town and remind of the past majesty of the castle, which saved many lives during the time of Turkish raids.

The castle was built in the 14th century. It was gradually expanding and becoming more and more majestic. The castle belonged to the second richest dynasty in Europe, and it still keeps the treasures of Esterházy graphs.

However, this is not the only and not the oldest castle in this vicinity. The Burgenland province is famous under its second name, the Land of Castles.

Despite its rich and long history, Forchtenstein’s state is excellent. Black roof tiles and tall, thick walls still glisten in the sun, and the wall frescoes are still bright and fresh.

Every day at dawn, the ringing voice of the bell named Simon is heard throughout the neighborhood. It praises the beauty of the countess who lived in the castle long ago. The second bell – Tot – was named in honor of her. Bertram, the sister of one of the castle heirs, was famous for her crow’s wing color of hair and the transparent, like cirrus clouds, skin. She was called the first beauty of Austria. Not only bells in a tall round tower, but also a statue of Paul, the first owner of the castle, welcomes the castle guests.

Forchtenstein is also known for the treasury, which is kept inside. The rich collection of artworks, most exhibits of which belong to the masters of the 17-18 centuries, is known throughout Europe. In the gallery, there are portraits of the castle owners’ ancestors, telling about the interior, clothes and decorations of the past epochs. In one of the halls, there are samples of weapons and the spoils of war of the 15th century.

The castle interior is of the baroque style. Here, you can familiarize yourself with furniture, unique clocks, silver mirrors, chandeliers, candelabra, painted porcelain and silk.

The views out of the windows and from the viewing platform of the castle are no less picturesque.
