In the first museums, all the exhibits were strictly under glass. Then there were museums, where it became possible to touch something rare and valuable. In recent years, thanks to modern technology, museum visitors can take part in various activities. The town of Encamp, the Principality of Andorra, is home to a museum of the third millennium, where you can not only become a participant of experiments but also the museum itself is part of the exhibition.
The modern Museum of Electricity is located on the ground floor of the old building of the country's only functioning hydroelectric power station, FEDA. The station was commissioned in 1934 and has been the main source of electricity for the entire Principality ever since.
The entire space of the museum is divided into two parts: a permanent exhibition and several halls for temporary exhibitions. For example, the exhibition of the road's construction of Andorra provides information about the plans of urban development and see what techniques are used to build important tracks and roads in the country.
The permanent exhibition of the museum begins with the first hall, where you can learn what energy is, how electricity was discovered, and how the development of this field has been going on since then. In the second hall, all the exhibits describe in detail how this amazing discovery affected locals. Here you can see the methods of using the properties of water, which played a huge role in the construction of the first hydroelectric power station in the early 20th century. By the way, a beautiful infrastructure was created throughout the country thanks to this power station. Besides, this room contains a documentary chronological section on the history of electricity in Andorra, starting from 1909. The third hall is a practical scientific laboratory, which consists of several entertaining and educational workshops. Here you can take part in fascinating experiments and experience the laws of electricity in practice. The design of the lab is in bright colors, and there are several screens on the walls with information about all the experiments. Usually, this part of the museum fascinates the youngest visitors, but adults will have an unforgettable experience here as well. The most interesting part of the museum is the engine room with the three operating generators of the hydroelectric power plant, which generate electricity.
