Beaches

Regular days spent in hammocks on the beach; a palm-fringed bay with coffee-colored sand; a release from the hustle and bustle of a large civilization. This is what tourists usually say about Jiquilillo beach. It is located 40 km northwest of Chinandega, the "city of oranges". This is probably the longest beach on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua.

Jiquilillo is part of the Estero Padre Ramos Nature Reserve. Therefore, many crafts and activities in this area are conducted without disturbing the natural environment. For example, residents are engaged in artisanal fishing. The beach adjoins a small seaside village with a small number of shacks and compact houses along the waterfront. Fishing is still the mainstay of the local economy. At dusk, men gather at the sand line, dragging their boats to the waves and getting ready for fishing. And at dawn, the beach turns into a fish market, where every local shopkeeper and family expose their catch; what is not sold immediately on the shore will go in boxes to Chinandega.

There are several ranch-style recreation areas along the coast. There you can find typical restaurants and minimalist accommodation for vacationers. Recently, lodges run by foreigners have appeared there. Moreover, these accommodation options are often chosen by foreign travelers.

But not only beach relaxation is available in the vicinity of Jiquilillo. There are such places to explore as the estuaries Los Zorros and Padre Ramos. On their banks, you can find restaurants and entertainment: kayaking, swimming, hiking.

People most actively visit this coastal region during the period of Semana Santa (Holy Week) on the eve of Easter as well as during the New Year period. At this time, both Nicaraguans and tourists from different parts of the world are resting there. In such top seasons, beach parties, beach sports, and other recreational activities are especially active. And the rest of the year Jiquilillo is a quiet and comfortable beach, perfect for relaxation.
