What can attract tourists to Honduras? There are no grandiose buildings, places that affected the history, ultramodern museums and galleries, snow-white sandy beaches with azure waves... People come to the country of mountains and rainforests to plunge into the world of pristine nature, filled with fragments of an ancient civilization. One of the country's hallmarks is the La Tigra National Park.
The cloud forest in the valley of the mountain of the same name was the first national park in Honduras. Local residents and authorities together fought to assign these places a special status that could ensure their safety, protect them from poachers and loggers. The area of the park is 238 square kilometers, and its height ranges from 1800 to 2185 meters.
La Tigra Park is located 25 km north of Tegucigalpa. You can get there through four entrances. The most popular ones are the highway leading to El Cotillo and the highway leading to Valle de Angeles, San Juancito, and Cantarranas.
The final abode of civilization is located in the small village El Rosario. There you can get valuable information about tourist routes, particulars of movement through the forest, its inhabitants. The village also has a museum of the history of La Tigra Park.
Century-old trees, mosses, ferns, and mushrooms serve as food for the inhabitants of the park. There are more than 200 species of birds and 13 species of reptiles. In the thickets you can see cougars, monkeys, and ocelots.
The national park is divided into two zones: the core and the periphery. The core is the centre of the forest where the largest number of animals and plants live. All hiking trails pass through the core zone. The periphery is the quietest and least visited place. There are pristine wildlife, waterfalls, and mountain lakes.
In total, the park has 8 hiking trails. They vary in length and complexity. However, the paths often intersect. So if you realize that the trail does not suit you, you can change it.
