The Maleku Indian Village is located in the dense thickets of Arenal Volcano National Park. Time seemed to have stopped in these small thatched houses. Their inhabitants carefully preserve centuries-old traditions. And they are not going to change their usual way of life.
The Maleku tribe has only 500 people. It is the smallest national settlement in Costa Rica. Despite its small size, the tribe has something to share: Maleku has a rich culture and history. Their ancient legends preserve the memory of the times before the appearance of cities and the state itself. Indians are happy to talk about themselves and their way of life, share customs, heritage, and some secrets of cooking. You can walk through the plantations located near the village, look inside the houses and outbuildings, and touch household items, toys, and various tools.
The landscapes, in which the settlement is located, create an atmosphere of antiquity. The village is hidden in the thickets of Arenal Volcano National Park. It is home to Arenal Volcano, which was considered dormant until an eruption of 1968. It is adjacent to the largest lake in the region of the same name and the second dormant Chato Volcano. In the crater of its "little brother", there is a lagoon, a hot mountain lake where you can swim.
Natural landscapes are covered with a haze of dark green rainforests. It is home to more than 850 species of exotic birds. Birds rest in the shade of sprawling branches. If you are lucky, you will be able to find one of the most elusive and beautiful birds in the country, the endangered resplendent quetzal. Besides, there are to white-faced capuchin monkeys, jaguars, deer, foxes, snakes, and frogs. The fauna there is also diverse. Orchids, heliconias, cineraria, bromeliads, and figs form a bright mosaic against a background of bright green mosses, ferns, palm trees, laurel.
There are houses and hotels in and around the park. Some of them have their own hot springs. Arenal Volcano National Park has also the Vulcanization Museum and Ranger Station.
