Trinidad and Tobago and surrounding
Castles, Fortresses, Towers
Castles, Fortresses, Towers

The fairytale kingdom of rainforests and white beaches should have the castle. There is one on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. But on the place of Stollmeyer’s Castle, you expect to see a huge thatched hut, a wooden building with many stages, or a traditionally modest house. Stollmeyer’s Castle is impressive, surprising, and striking in its size, beauty, and uniqueness.

You look at this palace and move to the foggy and gloomy mountains of Scotland from the sunny island in the Caribbean. It is a little refreshing. This effect is not accidental. The architect Robert Gillis was inspired by Balmoral Castle in Scotland. The original is much larger and bigger. But for small Trinidad, Stollmeyer’s Castle is a true palace. It was done of imported bricks. The external decoration was handmade.

The castle was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It was a gift to the owner’s wife. But she considered it to be very unusual and outrageous. But the house remained in their ownership. It is still inherited from one member of the Stollmeyer family to another.

Interestingly, in the place of such a beautiful building, there was a farm. Once a spire has shone on the Stollmeyer’s Castle turret and lace curtains have been hung on the windows, it was decided to build more similar palaces. People wanted to turn Port of Spain into a real Kingdom. They built seven houses, and Stollmeyer’s Castle became the first one of the “Fab Seven”. The architectural features of the castle have become a local feature.

Now it is the building with a small park. It is surrounded by a twisted fence. It is one of the colorful sights of Trinidad and Tobago. Here you feel like a member of the royal family on vacation. Locals are very proud of the castle.

Descendants of the Stollmeyer family still lived in Stollmeyer’s Castle at the end of the 20th century. Now it is a museum, storage of the history of Trinidad and Tobago. Go to Stollmeyer’s Castle and feel this contrast.
