The green hills of Bonaire Island, Netherlands Antilles, are hiding a beautiful salt Goto lake. The landscape looks a little bit weird: hills in the distance, a lake in the middle, green plain with cacti in the foreground. But you came here not to look at a landscape. It is very popular among tourists from all over the world by its huge population of pink flamingos! And about a hundred other species also inhabit the island.

But let’s talk about pink flamingos. We can watch them endlessly. Close to the lake, there is a road. You can stop there and enjoy the view. Or if you want to see the birds closer, come to these creatures, but do it carefully. 

If the birds fly away from one part of the lake, they go to the other. The lake is huge. Goto occupies 155 hectares. The water is salty because earlier the lake was connected with the Caribbean Sea. After a time, nature changed its mind, and a high strip of corals separated Goto from the sea. But the undercurrents could be left. 

Bright flamingos look unusual on the desert background of Bonaire, they add something special to it.  The color of flamingos largely depends on what these birds eat. In Lake Goto, they find food, making their feathers so brightly pink.

It is better to come to Lake Goto in the afternoon. Flocks of flamingos are returning from neighboring Venezuela where they feed.

Try to enjoy this beauty from afar. Goto Lake is located in a protected area, that is why the tourists are not allowed to go there. To observe the view, you can come to a special platform.
