The abandoned city of Plymouth

COM_SCATALOG_FIELD_DESCRIPTION

No bars, no clubs, no entertainment centers ... Plymouth has nothing, as well as entire Montserrat. There is one road, four small restaurants, six small churches, and 2 gas stations. It is a perfect place to stay alone, think, take a break from society.

The soliton place of the whole island is its former capital. Now it is the Plymouth ghost town. It was completely deserted in 1995. That year was fateful for thousands of residents. After 400 years of hibernation, the island’s main volcano, Soufrière Hills, began to erupt.

This is a very tragic and sad story. After a series of eruptions, the city was completely left. Almost all the islands became deserted. In 1995, before the disaster, the population of Montserrat was about 15 thousand people. After that – just 5 thousand. The volcano destroyed the only city on the island. Until now, there is no village or city, just lonely houses.

Plymouth is located on the coast. Once it was a developing old city. And now all streets and houses are completely covered with ash. People were hoping to come back, covering the furniture with sheeting and leaving things. In the closets, there still are the expensive outfits of the local beauties. In the fridge of once-popular cafes – products.

Mudflow passed through many houses. Over time, the mass hardened. All the objects in the rooms were cemented.

Plymouth is located in the exclusion zone. It is still dangerous there. The volcano erupts slowly, but it is not the lava that is dangerous. These are the mudflows because it is impossible to escape from them. Also, volcanic sand is loose and easily eroding. That is why Plymouth gradually goes underground.

Previously, you could see the city only from the sky by helicopter and from the water. But it was prohibited to come there close. The police were nearby.

COM_SCATALOG_FIELD_INTERESTING_FACTS

People were warned about the eruption. Some of them left hoping to come back. There were almost any human victims. Only 19 people died because they refused to leave the city. It would seem that after a disaster, people should close the island for visiting. But no. Montserrat was divided into zones.

There are dangerous zones due to the threat of an eruption. Entering the zone is prohibited. There are places, where people can live. But they should be prepared for a sudden evacuation. There are areas where people can live and do agriculture. The only threats are light quakes and volcanic ash. Another feature of Montserrat is the wild animals that used to be domestic ones. People left the exclusion zone, but not dogs and goats. They become completely wild.
