Castles, Fortresses, Towers

There is a monument on the Haiti Island – a symbol that history can be turned on its head. Watching Sanssouci Palace on a distance, you get surprised by its power and size. It also shows its former beauty despite time and natural disasters. You may think that the building was the propriety of a rich ruler, a king ... and you are right! But the owner did not have such a status from birth. Henri Christophe was a slave on local plantations, and some time later, declared himself king of Haiti.

Sanssouci Palace is very impressive. You can walk along the ruins and mentally add some details. You restore the old columns and imagine how rulers of other countries visited this magnificent house. At one time, the palace was considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the West Indies.

Look at the building and a view that opens from the hill. There is a dense forest and beautiful nature of Haiti around. Henri Christophe found the perfect place for his palace. The house was established after the Revolutionary War when a slave became a king.

Henri declared himself the supreme ruler after the assassination of his former ally and leader of the revolution Jean-Jacques Dessalin. The title of governor-general seemed too insignificant for Henri Christophe and his family. That is how the title of the Haitian king appeared. The slave ruler proclaimed his son a prince and sole heir.

These beautiful constructions keep a lot of terrible secrets! Henri Christophe lived in the castle just for seven years. He got a stroke, and the monarch decided to put him out of misery and put a bullet in his skull. He was buried in the territory of another sight of the island - the citadel of La Ferrier.

Only the walls were left from the palace. The reason is the steady earthquakes. The restoration of this beautiful palace, the highlight of the Caribbean, was prevented by the complicated political situation and constant wars on the island.
