Perhaps walking along the picturesque beaches, beautiful hills, among huge palm trees, hiding you from the baking sun, you can see little beige houses with gray roofs and stone fences. You might be wondered, who are these lucky people living on the very board of the ocean. Perhaps you even come to the modest settlement contrasting to the entire surrounding landscape. And then your hair stands on end, and goosebumps run on your skin… Because the place on one of the most beautiful islands in the world, where you come, is one of the most terrible places on earth. It is called hell in the center of paradise ... A settlement of several long beige houses is one of the worst correctional facilities in the world.

It is hard to imagine that that place was located in such a wonderful area with beautiful landscapes and colorful sunsets. Now, fortunately, the facility is closed, but the constructions are left as a memory of the horrors happening there.

These places are left for descendants to remember. There were sent criminals, but, according to archival documents, even more terrible criminals controlled the facility. The settlement consisted of prisoners of state and dangerous criminals. Prisoners were violently beaten even for singing. And after that, jailers made people with slashed backs to carry bags with salt and other products.

Sentenced people worked as agriculturists and constructors, crawled on rocks, made bricks and chopped pine trees - hard work was one of the used punishments. The jailers did not believe that people can change and severely punished everybody. A couple of times the prisoners raised a rebellion, but they were quickly stopped by the use of inhuman methods.

The main evidence of the deadly punishments in the Norfolk Correctional Facility is a huge cemetery. The names on the plates are carved by hand. That place terrifies and leaves a lot of questions: how this could happen, and why here?
