An art gallery in each city is a reflection of how the locals perceive beauty and tradition. That's why all the galleries are so different and it's hard to find at least two similar ones.

The Tauranga Art Gallery is unique. It opened not so long ago, in 2007, in a building that had housed the Bank of New Zealand since 1873. At first, it was only an administrative building, but at the end of the 19th century, the bank manager and his family moved into it. So the building was significantly expanded. Later, it turned into the mansion of the bank manager.

By the early 1960s, the house was declared a 'dangerous structure'. But they didn't want to demolish the old building. Therefore, local architects have developed an interesting solution: they built a glass "curtain", which allowed them to save the building. A few years later, the first air conditioners in the city appeared there.

The big house has been used for various purposes for a long time. It was only in the late 1990s that the decision was made to house the first art gallery in Tauranga. The preparation work took more than five years: first, almost complete reconstruction of the building was carried out to meet the requirements for museums. Secondly, the collection was replenished so that it would not look empty and uninteresting for the opening of the cultural center. But the result is a multifunctional building with unique exhibits placed in it, ideal for exhibition areas and thematic events.

Today there are several permanent exhibitions dedicated to folk art, contemporary local artists, the history of the city, and people. There are also regular temporary exhibitions. You can also participate in art markets. Local artists, jewelers, and ceramists sell their work there. And the proceeds are directed to the development of the gallery. Since it is a completely non-commercial project that has been successfully existing for many years.
