Rotorua is known primarily for the fact that there are a large number of thermal springs. People from all over New Zealand go there with a desire to relax and improve their health in natural spas. In the past few years, this destination has become popular with foreign tourists.
Wai-O-Tapu geothermal park is an unusual place. According to unofficial tourist statistics, it has been included in the 20 most surreal places on the planet for several years.
And all because the landscapes that open up before the guests of Wai-O-Tapu are not comparable to anything.
You can choose several walking routes in the park. The most popular among guests are three excursions, each of which takes from 19 to 40 minutes. The first route leads only to the Lady Knox geysers, the second-to the Champagne Pool. The longest third route covers these three attractions, runs through the entire park, and leads to the picturesque lake Palette of artists.
The landscape is incredible, so when you go on the road, be sure to choose the most comfortable shoes: you will have to walk a lot and not on the smoothest roads.
The first place to start exploring Wai-O-Tapu Park is the Lady Knox geyser. Scientists still can't figure out why it only erupts once a day and strictly at a certain time, at 10.15 a.m. So if you want to see this beauty, don't be late. The performance lasts about 20 minutes.
The Champagne Pool is a lake whose water is rich in carbon dioxide. That's why it looks like champagne: it also plays with bubbles and sizzles. This lake was formed more than 900 years ago due to a geothermal eruption. And it continues to be filled. The "glass" there is quite large: in some places, the depth of the lake reaches 65 meters.
And, of course, the palette of artists. This lake got its name due to its unusual coloring. It contains a huge amount of salts and minerals that color the water, making it so bright. This is a real natural wonder that you should see when visiting the unusual Wai-O-Tapu Park.
