The Pātaka Art Museum is the gem of Porirua's cultural life. Every day something happens interesting there: new exhibitions, lectures, master classes, film screenings, discussions of cultural events. Therefore, you can come to the Pātaka Art + Museum any day and you will definitely see some bright event.
The Pātaka Art + Museum is located right in the heart of the city. The museum building is so unusual that it is quite difficult to pass it by bright, with clear lines. It draws attention and makes you want to know what is happening outside the walls of this museum.
Modern art is created and traditional creativity is preserved there. So everyone can come in touch with the world of beauty.
The museum opened in September 1998, after the Porirua Museum, established in 1980, and the local Art gallery, opened in 1990, merged. The new cultural center needed more space. So a modern, multi-functional building was built to meet its objectives.
This cultural complex can be divided into four blocks: the museum itself with permanent exhibitions, exhibition and lecture halls where thematic events are held, an extensive library that presents both new authors and folk art, and a research department dedicated to the study of cultural heritage.
And another attraction of the city is located in the museum courtyard. It's a Japanese rock garden, created in the style of Kasansay. It embodies the idea of transmitting the energy of mountains and water using stones and gravel laid in a certain system. White gravel with rounded corners symbolizes the metaphor of the sea. And dark stones represent the mountains, waterfalls, and streams. If you look closely at these tricky patterns, you can trace the path of a dried-up waterfall that flows into the bed of a dry stream.
The Pātaka Art + Museum is a modern and dynamic museum. There are no strict canons and rules. There you can spend quality time. And after you will be full of new emotions, you can relax, looking at the Japanese garden of stones.
