The Te Rewa Rewa Bridge is a truly unique structure of modern architects. It is very different from the usual bridges. It draws attention and at the same time fits perfectly into the surrounding landscape, organically becoming part of it.
The Te Rewa Rewa Bridge was opened in 2010. It was designed and created by Novare Design professionals, who wanted not only to decorate the area with unusual architecture but also to show the integral meaning of this place, its significance. It is because the sacred mount Taranaki, revered by all generations of residents, is located very close.
What sense did the designers put into their project, which has become a favorite tourist attraction and a work of art and the main decoration of new Plymouth for the citizens? According to the authors, they wanted to show the connection between different worlds, between the past and the future, nature, and urbanism. And they did it.
The bridge is located between the two banks of the Waiwhakaiho River. This is a special place in the city, not only be6cause it is close to the sacred mountain, but also because it is very close to the cemetery where the victims of one of the many battles of the Musket wars are buried. Therefore, before construction, the architects coordinated the project with the most important socio-political association of Maori the hapu, which is responsible for the preservation of the cemetery. After seeing the preliminary sketches, the Maori agreed to the construction of the bridge. It made a strong impression on them: something mystical was seen by the Indians in this project.
The Te Rewa Rewa Bridge has a length of more than 68 meters. Its width is 2.5 meters, and its maximum height is 10 meters. The single-span bridge seems to be made of pipes that intertwine in a bizarre pattern, framing the sacred mountain of Taranaki.
Even though it looks quite fragile and is intended primarily for pedestrians and cyclists, the structure can withstand the movement of official vehicles.
