On the beach close to Nelson, an unusual sight is bathing in the sun and sea waves. A giant stone apple, neatly cut in half with a huge "knife", is located in the crystal-clear waters of Tasman Bay.

This natural rock formation, known as the “Split Apple” is based close to the coast between Kaiteriteri and Marahau in the Abel Tasman National Park. It is “made” of granite. Its age is about 120 million years. On the crack with a 6-meter diameter grows moss, and the waters are full of algae, that is why the “apple” has its natural green color from time to time. In 2014, the natural creation was officially named Tokangawhā Split Apple Rock.

The rock is located about 50 meters from the coast. To the beach, you can come on foot along a short road. To the apple, there is a path just during an ebb. Or, when the water is on a high level, you can go there with canoes. If you want to see the rock from the sea, come to a kayak tour or take a water taxi.

A walk through the Abel Tasman National Park is worth your time. The most attractive sites are beaches. Golden sands draw you to plunge into the crystal-clear waters of the ocean and bask in the sun. And the most attentive guests can find the multicolored shells brought from the bottom. Some beaches have unusual sand spits. They are hidden during the flood and can be inconvenient for people riding a boat. On the beach, you can also watch cormorants and catch oysters.

Going far from the beaches to the center of the island, you can see how the park changes. It is more mountainous there. You also can see rare beech forests of all four species. And in the thickets are hiding animals and birds. Forest pigeons, New Zealand thujas ( even if you will not see them, you can definitely hear them), incredibly rare blue penguins, ermines, and possums.
