East Cape Lighthouse is the New Zealand's easternmost lighthouse. This is a perfect place for watching the early rays of the sun casting blurry tones to the grass and trees of Manuka. Watch the waves and hiding marine animals. To inhale the inebriating fresh air with the smell of salty drops and rare plants.
The construction is located on the 144-meter Otica, a lonely hill, right on the coast of the Eastern Cape. It is the closest lighthouse to the date line. This makes it the best place to watch the world's first sunrise. Two kilometers away from the coast is an East Island. People established a lighthouse there for the first time in 1900.
East Cape Lighthouse is located on the altitude of 154 meters above sea level. The white tower with a black lantern roof greets sailors and visitors, friendly winking with lights. The height of the tower is 15 meters. On the roof, there is a huge lamp and a balcony with a stunning view of the water surface and coastal hills.
Now, the management of the lighthouse is made by the computer directly from the Maritime New Zealand office in Wellington. Moreover, in the case of a power failure, the batteries can provide the work of the construction for several hours. Despite the high popularity among tourists, the lighthouse is used by its original purpose.
In June 2017, the Gisborne District Council allotted an area of 70 hectares around the lighthouse for a nature reserve. There are growing Puriri trees, New Zealand flax, South Sea myrtle, and a special kind of plantain.
You can get to the lighthouse by a coastal road about 20 kilometers long. Then you need to overcome a little hiking path of 700 steps to climb to the top of the hill.
