Ancient castles, fortresses, ruined cities – these mysterious places are interesting for travelers because they can be inhabited by ghosts. Micronesia has its tourist mecca with a long history - these are the ruins of the previously beautiful and rich city of Nan Madol, founded between 1285 and 1485 years and destroyed at the beginning of the 16th century.
The heyday of Nan Madol was in the 14th century when the Saudeler dynasty ruled. That time the population of the city was about 1000 people. Workers from neighboring islands were invited for the building the expanding complex. There was created a real architectural masterpiece with coral reefs in the base.
As a result, there were built squares, palaces, mausoleums, temples, tombs, public buildings, and even a prison.
Significantly, that was a city for the rich people: there was no production, or fields, or the source of pure water, everything was brought from Pohnpei Island. Priests, rulers, and representatives of the higher castes lived in Nan Madol.
According to the legends, one of the temples has a crystal-clear lake, in the reflection, the priestesses saw everything happening at a distance and predicted the future.
But with time their power weakened, the city turned poorer and fell into decay. And in the 16th century, it was completely deserted. The inhabitants of other islands were afraid to come there, considering the place cursed.
The first research work on the place of ruins was led by the Japanese at the beginning of the 20th century. After the Second World War, the islands were under the influence of the United States, the scientists began to be interested in the new archeological miracle and examine it. They discovered that under the city there is an entire complex system of tunnels connecting the islands. Like it is a second, underwater city.
Also, during the research it was investigated that all the walls of the city have anomalous magnetic activity: close to them, the compass needle rotates without stopping.
How many secrets and treasures the city keeps? It is unknown. One thing is clear: for many years it attracts a huge number of tourists, who want to touch the ancient history.
