On the whole territory of Australia, two lighthouses are located almost close to each other only on one coast in Wollongong. You can visit both of them in just a few hours. However, it is better to take your time and enjoy the beauty of each lighthouse, learn its history, and climb to its observation platform to look at the endless ocean and the elegant coastline.
The first lighthouse is the Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse. The locals just call it the old lighthouse. Short, only 13 meters, stocky. It is located in the beautiful Harbor of Endeavor Drive. Engineers feared that the structure would not withstand frequent Gale-force winds during construction. But these experiences were in vain. The lighthouse was first lit in 1872 and served the city for almost a hundred years: the lighthouse stopped working in 1974, becoming a city landmark, a meeting place for couples, and, of course, a popular attraction for tourists. For children, there is a playground and a large green lawn. This is a great place to spend a day on the coast with the whole family, enjoying the beautiful ocean and good weather without any worries.
The brother and colleague of the old lighthouse the Flagstaff Hill Lighthouse stands on the other side of the harbor. This beacon is still active. Both day and night, its lights point the way for sailors and attract romantic natures. The Flagstaff lighthouse was built much later than the old one, in 1936. It is higher-25 meters, more modern and beautiful. Next to the lighthouse, there are piers that go directly into the ocean. Besides, the lighthouse roof offers an incredible view of the entire harbor.
