The Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is located almost in the heart of Townsville. This is one of the largest and most famous galleries in the city. To date, the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery has more than two thousand works on display. These are mostly paintings by local artists, both old school and modern art.
In addition to an extensive permanent exhibition, the Perc Trucker Regional Gallery regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, master classes, thematic lectures, and seminars, as well as small theaters and musical ensembles. In other words, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is not only a gallery, but it is also a real cultural center where life is in full swing and all the talented residents of the city gather.
The building that houses the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is the architectural monument that was built in 1885 as the local branch of the United Bank of Australia. The first version of the building was one story. The second floor was completed in the 1930s, as there was not enough space for banking operations.
In the 1950s, the bank moved out of the beautiful mansion. The building was occupied by a variety of institutions for a long time. And in 1980 the house was bought by the Townsville City Council. It was immediately decided to place a gallery in the building. The necessary restoration and preparatory works were carried out for a year to convert the premises into exhibition halls. And so, in 1981, the grand opening of the first art gallery in the city, which immediately became a favorite cultural center of citizens, took place.
An important part of the life of the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is a truly unique event – the Ephemera exhibition, which is held every two years and lasts for ten days. At this time, the main embankment of the city of Townsville turns into a huge exhibition hall: sculptures, paintings, installations are displayed directly on the shore in the open air. So everyone can see them. The exhibition looks especially beautiful during the sunset.
