Small Magnetic Island, which covers an area of just over 50 square kilometers, is located directly opposite the city of Townsville. This island is a favorite vacation spot for residents and visitors to the city.
Getting to the island couldn't be easier: just take the ferry. The journey will take about half an hour. During that time you will be able to enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding area from the water and admire the picturesque island.
Magnetic Island is interesting because more than half of the island is occupied by a national park, where there is a famous bird sanctuary, a large number of hiking and cycling routes of varying degrees of complexity, and specially equipped places for recreation. The rest of the area contains four small villages that are suburbs of Townsville.
Before Europeans came to Australia, Magnetic Island was inhabited by aborigines who called the island Yunbunam. Their homes were located on the banks, and they traveled to the mainland by canoe. Today there are several burial grounds of aborigines, as well as drawings in caves, which are located in numerous bays of the island.
A large holiday home for Europeans, built at the expense of a rich patron, was located on the island in the 19th century. And during the Second World War Magnetic Island was of great strategic importance: barracks and a fort were built there.
Modern Magnetic Island is a paradise for those who love outdoor activities. For example, you can go kayaking in Horseshoe Bay. And the Great Barrier Reef, which is quite close, is an ideal place for diving. Nelly Bay was chosen by connoisseurs of sailing. So, everyone finds something to do there.
And most importantly, the island is very picturesque. It is worth coming there even for the sake of just observing the wildlife and a little rest from the busy life of the metropolis.
