Toowoomba is a small city in Australia. However, many fans of bright holidays and flowers know about the existence of this town for more than 50 years. Where did such popularity come from?
It all started in 1949, when the first, then very small, Australian Carnival of Flowers festival was held in Toowoomba. The city was decorated with various flower compositions. And one day a column of brightly dressed people passed through the center of the city, singing songs.
So the festival was born, which is now known far beyond the borders of Australia - the Australian Carnival of Flowers festival.
At that time, the main goal of the festival was to attract attention to the city from tourists and stimulate economic activity after the difficult years of the Second World War.
But gradually the goals of the holiday changed. Today it is a bright event that is loved by the citizens and visitors of Toowoomba, many of whom come there for the duration of the festival to enjoy the beauty of the decorated streets and the main parade.
The first street parade was held on October 28, 1950. Then the street procession stretched for almost three miles. More than 50,000 people participated in the festival. It was an incredible event that had a stunning success.
The Toowoomba Australian Carnival of Flowers festival has a large number of awards, including the Australian Tourism Award (2018) and placement in the honorary hall of fame at the 2017 Queensland Tourism Awards.
During the festival, the city turns into a blooming garden. Flowers are grown especially for the carnival. Moreover, huge live displays are made, which are then placed on the main squares of the city. More than 150,000 seeds, bulbs, and seedlings are planted at a specific time so that all the flowers will bloom for the opening of the festival, turning Toowoomba into a magical Flower Kingdom.
Yearly increases the number of people taking part in the carnival, which traditionally last 10 days. The record was recorded in 2019: 255,639 people registered for the Australian Carnival of Flowers festival.
