The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia's most famous and photographed landmarks, which locals affectionately call the «coathanger». This is the largest (but not the longest) steel arch bridge in the world, the top of which rises 134 meters above the harbor. It crosses Port Jackson Bay and connects the southern and northern parts of Sydney.

Construction of the Harbour Bridge began in 1924. It took 4.2 million pounds, 1,400 people, and 8 years of continuous work to build the bridge. It was officially opened in 1932.

At that time, it cost 3 pence to cross the bridge on a horse, and 6 pence by car. Now riders do not cross the Harbour Bridge, but residents and visitors can freely cross the pedestrian road or ride a bicycle on a special lane. There are also 8 lanes for vehicles and 2 railway lines – one in each direction.

If you want to and are not afraid of heights, you can climb the bridge. This opportunity appeared in 1998. You will have an extreme ascent on the ramps, stairs, and steps to the top of the Harbour Bridge. The reward for bravery is a spectacular view of Sydney. There are day, twilight, and night ascents. Groups of 10-15 people start every 10 to 20 minutes. Wear comfortable shoes with rubber soles, and go! Everything else – a special suit and insurance – is issued on the spot.

If you find yourself in Sydney on New Year's Eve, you can see another unique thing connected with the Harbour Bridge. This bridge is an important part of festive events and exciting pyrotechnic shows. The first of them is the «warm-up» fireworks display for families with young children. It takes place on the evening before the New Year. The second is the main fireworks display, which starts at midnight. For the first time, such a show took place in the mid-eighties of the last century during the 75th anniversary of the Australian Navy. New Year's fireworks began to take place ten years later. Every year they attract a huge number of tourists, locals, and TV viewers from all over the world.
