Edward Tyrrell was only 19 years old when he moved from England to Australia in 1854. At first, the young man planned to go into dairy farming. But when he visited the Hunter Valley, he was struck by the vast fields of flowering vineyards. A few years later, Edward settled at the foot of Broken Back Range, built a modest hut that still stands today, and took up winemaking.
The young man became interested in two grape varieties, Semillon and Shiraz (Syrah), which, as has already been proven, grow well on hot Australian soil. Edward harvested his first crop in 1864. He devoted more than half a century to winemaking. During this time he managed to plant about 70 acres of vines, start a family and pass on his knowledge to his sons Dan and Avery, who continued the work of his life.
Dan Tyrrell was only 18 years old when he had already created his first wine. The young man soon became an established producer of some of the best wines in the Hunter Valley and eventually became Uncle Dan, known and loved by all Australians. He took part in 69 harvests and even caught the 100th anniversary of his father's wine business. All the while, his younger brother Avery Tyrrell was by his side. Avery took a meticulous approach to manage the vineyards that became the foundation of Dan's great wines. Together they assembled a strong team of professional winemakers who helped them with everything. Another great achievement of Avery is his son Murray, who continued the family business and revolutionized Australian winemaking.
So one of the oldest and most distinguished wine companies has passed through the capable hands and inquisitive minds of five generations of Tyrrells who still run the family business and adhere to a simple philosophy of creating quality wines and remaining one of the most successful wine companies in Australia and the world.
