Temples, Churches

The majestic and monumental Christ Church Cathedral, located in the Eastern part of Newcastle, is one of the main attractions of the city.

Designed in the Gothic revival style, it impresses with its size and shape: the building stands out very much among other buildings and more resembles a large beautiful castle than a temple.

In the early 19th century, the site of the current Christ Church Cathedral was also occupied by a church. It was small and not very beautiful. At the same time, it was built for more than a hundred years: the main workers in this construction were prisoners who did not have any qualifications.

In the second half of the 1850s, coal production in Newcastle increased significantly. More and more people came to the city. As a result, there was a need for a new, more spacious, and beautiful cathedral.

The city administration announced a competition for the project of the temple. The conditions were almost impossible: the cathedral had to accommodate at least 1,000 people, but the cost of construction was not to exceed 10,000 pounds. The winners were architects from Melbourne, but even their project had to be reduced in cost. Therefore, from the moment of selecting the winner of the competition in 1868, to the beginning of construction in 1883, a lot of time passed: it took so long to coordinate and change the estimate of construction work.

Today, Christ Church Cathedral is famous for its beautiful stained glass windows. For example, the largest collection of stained glass windows of the famous London Studio Kempe & Co is preserved there: guests are delighted by more than 60 wonderful drawings. But the most beautiful stained glass is the Dies Domini (Lord's Day) window, which was installed in 1907. It is unique for Australia, and the whole world, because another similar work stands in the Church of Mary Magdalene in Berkshire in England. This is a real work of art, which is also protected by the state as a historical heritage.
