The Queen Victoria Market, or Vic Market, is not just a marketplace but one of Melbourne's oldest and most important attractions. It was formed back in 1878 on the site of a former cemetery and has been one of the most popular places in the city for over 140 years. If you want to pass the time while shopping and also learning more about Melbourne's modern cuisine and culture, then don't hesitate to come here.

The market has evolved over the years. It now covers two city blocks in Melbourne's Central Business District and offers more than 600 stalls offering everything from clothing and souvenirs to local delicacies and drinks. It's the biggest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere, so it is unlikely to leave here without shopping.

Walking around the numerous rows of friendly sellers, it is not so much the variety of products that strikes but the awareness of the historical contribution of this place to the establishment and development of the city. It is no accident that the market, built during the Victorian era, continues to actively develop and operate even today. Its great historical significance is also confirmed by the fact that it is included in the Victorian Heritage Register and the National Heritage List of Australia.

When you first arrive at the Queen Victoria Market, the first thing you must do is enjoy its unique atmosphere. It consists not only of lively vendors and shoppers but also a veritable symphony of colors, tastes, and smells. The goods at the local food stalls are very different from what you might see in markets elsewhere. Next to seasonal fruits and vegetables, there are national products from all over the world. This is because Australia is a country of migrants, and its national diversity is reflected in the counters of Melbourne's main market.

In May 2019, the market management banned the use of single-use plastic bags and straws for drinks on its premises. Instead, visitors can rent a special cart or purchase a reusable shopping bag.
