Yarra Yering is one of the oldest and most beautiful wineries in Victoria, Australia. It is located in the Yarra Valley at the foot of the Warramatte Hills and covers 28 hectares of land that is almost entirely planted with vines. Come to this incredible place to taste some of Australia's best wines and learn about the past, present, and future of Australian winemaking.
If you dig deeper into history, you'll find that wine production in the Yarra Valley began back in the mid-eighties of the 19th century. For 40 years this alcoholic beverage was the main product of the local export. But in the twenties of the 20th century, the economic situation changed drastically, and wine production stopped. The Yarra Valley needed a real dreamer to rebuild its winemaking, and he appeared in 1969 in the form of Dr. Bailey Carrodus, the founder of the Yarra Yering winery.
Bailey Carrodus got a serious professional education before devoting himself entirely to wine. He first received a degree in horticulture, then a degree in winemaking, and in 1965, he received a doctorate for his research in plant physiology. In the early sixties, while studying at the Queen's College at Oxford University, Bailey Carrodus was introduced to the exquisite and elegant wines of Europe. This experience inspired him to travel to the finest vineyards of Italy, Spain, Portugal, and France, where he eagerly absorbed new knowledge, which he eventually brought back to Australia. Dr. Carrodus took a job at the University of Melbourne and began looking for land where he could create his favorite wine. This search led him to the Yarra Valley.
Dr. Carrodus found the perfect spot at the foot of the Warramatte Hills. A gentle slope on the overthrown side, a soil of deep silty loam and good drainage met all his requirements. The first Yarra Yering vintage, inspired by the French regions of the Northern Rhone and Bordeaux, was created in 1973. The winery quickly became one of the best in Australia and gained international recognition for its high quality and vibrant individuality of the drinks.
