Federation Square or shortly Fed Square is not your typical definition of a square! There are world-class exhibition halls and festival venues. A variety of food and drinks in bars, cafes, and restaurants. Unusual events that win the hearts of the citizens and visitors of Melbourne year after year. This place is the main center of cultural and social events of the city, which does not stop for a minute.
Fed Square occupies an entire block of approximately 40,000 square meters. It is surrounded on four sides by the Yarra River and Swanston Street, Russell Street, and Flinders Street, and part of the area is located on an artificial platform above the railway that runs from Flinders Street Station.
Fed Square offers beautiful views of the parks and Royal Botanic Gardens across the river, as well as the central historical part of Melbourne. So, from here you can clearly see St. Paul's Cathedral – the largest Anglican Church in Australia, built in the neo-Gothic style.
Fed Square cultural complex includes art galleries, the most famous of which is the Ian Potter Center, a branch of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). There are also exhibition halls, shops, bars and restaurants, the cinema center and the ACMI Museum. All buildings included in the complex have an irregular shape and are popularly called «shards».
Special attention should be paid to the Ian Potter Center, a new building of the nearby located National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). It was opened in 2003 and got its name thanks to a businessman and philanthropist who did a lot for its development. The Center's exposition includes unique historical and artistic items that are not found anywhere else in the world. These are cultural items and artworks of native Australians. Other works include paintings by local artists and photographers.
Life is always in full swing in Fed Square. The program of events is scheduled for several months in advance and includes about 1000 different events a year, which are visited by more than 8 million people. I bet that once you're in Melbourne, you won't miss the chance to become a part of these statistics.
