The Royal Exhibition Building is a chic building that has been captivating visitors and residents of Melbourne with its beauty for more than a century. Its uniqueness lies not only in its architecture but also in the fact that it is the first building located on the territory of the country, which, thanks to active public work, was included in the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
This magnificent building was built in 1880, specifically for the date of the international exhibition in Melbourne. Interestingly, there were many similar exhibitions at the turn of the century, they were held in different cities and special pavilions were built in each of them. But only a few of them have been preserved. The building of the Royal Exhibition Building is one of them.
The Royal Exhibition Building is stunning in its scope. There, only the ballroom has an area of more than 12 thousand square meters. And that doesn't even count many small rooms. As a model for the great dome, the architects took the famous dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, located in Florence.
The 1880 exhibition was an incredible success. It was visited by more than a million guests in six months. The pavilion proved to be very convenient for such events, and in 1888 another international exhibition, dedicated to the centenary of the beginning of the development of Australia by Europeans, was held there.
And in 1901, probably one of the most significant events in the life of the country took place in this chic building. There, the independence of Australia was declared.
After that, the state government of Victoria worked there for almost thirty years. During the First World War, the main hall of the center housed a military hospital, which brought the wounded from all over the country. And during the Second World War, a military camp was set up in and near the building.
Today, there are a variety of events ranging from flower shows, ending with the final points of higher educational institutions. Moreover, the exterior of the Royal Exhibition Building perfectly decorates Melbourne.
