In Melbourne, there is a very beautiful corner of the city, where the St. Paul’s Cathedral is located. Opposite it is Federation Square with its famous architectural complex. Almost exactly diagonally from the cathedral, there is a beautiful railway station. And all these buildings together with the cathedral make up a kind of the historical center of Melbourne.
St. Paul's Cathedral is notable for being the largest Anglican Church in the city and the second largest in the entire country.
Built in the Gothic style, St Paul's Cathedral is visible from almost anywhere in Melbourne. Therefore, it often serves as a kind of reference point for tourists who come to the city for the first time.
This cathedral is quite young. Previously, there was an old and small St. James Cathedral, where services were held, since the formation of the city in 1835. In 1880, it was decided to build a new cathedral, larger in size, and much more beautiful than the old one.
The construction of the cathedral was not easy since the architect lived and worked in London. He had never come to the construction site, which led to a large number of mistakes and alterations. But despite the difficulties, the project was completed, and St. Paul's Cathedral became the tallest building in the city.
Interestingly, the building material, sandstone, was imported from New South Wales. The use of local limestone was abandoned for two reasons: too many buildings in the city were already built from it, so the cathedral could not stand out against their background, and it is the sandstone that has a beautiful warm hue, which was so liked by the London architect.
A few years later, an organ, the creation of the famous English master Lewis, was brought to Melbourne specifically for this cathedral. The organ consists of 6,500 pipes. It is considered one of the largest organs in the world made in the 19th century. The organ has served faithfully for more than a hundred years. In the 1990s, a complete reconstruction of the instrument was carried out, which allowed improving the sound. More than 700 thousand dollars was spent on this.
