Josef Chromy Wines is a unique place that played an important role in the development of the Tasmanian food and wine industry. It is located 15 minutes south of Launceston and covers an area of 61 hectares. Locals and travelers who appreciate high-quality alcohol and want to learn a little more about it are always welcome here.
The year is 2007. Josef Chromie is already 76 years old. While others of his respectable age are quietly enjoying a well-deserved rest, he founded a winery and named it after himself. In just 4 years, Josef Chromy's company burst onto the Australian wine market and had an impressive impact on it. Dozens of awards, hundreds of medals – and that's just at the beginning of the journey! In a very short time, Josef Chromy's winery has become the brightest discovery of modern times in the world of wine, as well as one of the most influential alcoholic companies from Tasmania, Australia. What is the secret of this incredible success?
Josef is a Czech immigrant. He left his war-torn village in 1950. He was only 19 years old and had already endured 11 years of Nazi and Soviet occupation. Josef escaped across the border guarded by minefields, dogs, and soldiers. He survived five months of hardship before immigrating to Australia. But over the next 40 years, he worked hard and used his knowledge and skills got in the homeland to go from being a simple small-scale butcher to a wealthy owner of one of Tasmania's leading meat brands, Blue Ribbon Meat Products. In 1993, he sold his company and invested the money in real estate on the island of Tasmania and in the fledgling wine industry. Josef saw an opportunity where none existed before – and he was right.
Visitors of Josef Chromy Wines can enjoy an entertaining tour of the vineyards and cellars, as well as tastings of local food and wines made from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc.
