An important event took place in Launceston in 1842. Two major organizations, the Royal Society of Tasmania and the Launceston Mechanics' Institute decided to combine their art collections to create a large museum in the city, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.

Almost 50 years have passed since the idea was born and its implementation began. The official opening of the museum, which was originally called the Museum and Art Gallery of Victoria, took place only in 1891. It was a big event for the whole city.

The construction of the building for the museum was carried out by a young architect who had not yet had any well-known and large-scale projects implemented. It was chosen through a competition announced by the city authorities to find the most beautiful and interesting design option for the future museum.

Several exhibitions were available to visitors immediately after the opening of the museum. On the ground floor, there were collections of minerals and other artifacts related to the natural sciences. And on the upper level, there were paintings and art.

The number of exhibits gradually increased. Therefore, the museum received additional space in 1907. Now it houses zoological galleries.

And the Museum's Fund was supplemented by the unique collection of John Watt Beattie in 1927. The collection included treasures of colonial history, art, and some information about the life and lifestyle of convicted Australians.

The museum has been actively developing new collections and new buildings since 2001. Now it is a complex that covers the history, science, fine art, and design that developed in Australia. The complex includes an Art Gallery in the Royal Park and a Museum at Inveresk.

In addition to the exhibition process, the museum constantly conducts scientific work: new exhibits are studied, old ones are restored, and the traditions and culture of the local population are preserved. Everything is done in order to preserve and pass on to future generations all the knowledge and treasures obtained in the course of the museum's work.
