Mount Wellington is located just outside Hobart and is the dominant feature of the city. It is an ancient natural landmark that dates back to the Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic periods. It reaches a height of 1270 meters, and its distinctive feature and decoration are the huge stone columns. These rocks are popularly nicknamed organ pipes: they resemble them and make interesting sounds when the wind blows past.

Wellington was discovered in the late 18th century. The first man who conquered it was George Bass: an English traveler and explorer of Australia. He climbed to the top on Christmas Day in 1798. In those early days, the mountain was renamed many times, both by the indigenous population and by the colonizers. Tasmanians favored the name Kunanyi. The mountain received its current official name in the 1920s in honor of the Irish-born military leader and politician Arthur Wesley, who was the first holder of the honorary title – Duke of Wellington.

Since the mid-19th century, Hobart's main natural attraction has been gaining popularity with residents. The first hiking trails and recreational areas appeared here. During a long walk, one group of tourists discovered a picturesque waterfall on the southern slopes of the mountain. At the same time, people began to make extensive use of its natural resources. For many decades, environmentalists fought to preserve the mountain's rich biodiversity and eventually succeeded: Wellington and its surroundings are protected by the state now.

Today, Hobart's main peak continues to be a favorite destination for citizens and travelers. Even Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who visited Tasmania in 2014, confessed his fondness for Mount Wellington. The views from the peak are breathtaking all around. They are particularly stunning during sunrises and sunsets. To make the stay at the top as comfortable as possible, several convenient viewing platforms are equipped for tourists.
