Almost in the heart of the city of Darwin, near the business center, there is a unique Botanical Garden named after George Brown.
The richest collection of plants in Australia and Europe is collecting on an area exceeding 42 hectares. Besides, the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens is probably the only Botanical Garden in the world where plants that are not typical for this area grow in natural conditions.
The garden was founded in 1886. It created for a reason: Europeans who came to Darwin wanted to create a place where they could grow plants that were profitable for sale in a difficult tropical climate. They did not succeed immediately. Only the third attempt was successful: this is how the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens appeared in Darwin. It is noteworthy that the climate zones of all the earth's continents (except Antarctica) have been recreated there using special technologies.
A huge collection of plants, both tropical and European, has been going on for almost a hundred years. Scientific works and research have been carried out to create new varieties . But in 1974, Tracy's cyclone had a dramatic effect on the garden, as well as the entire region. As a result of natural disaster, almost 90% of the plants were destroyed.
Restoring the garden after such a tragedy was undertaken by George Brown, a specialist who has worked in the garden since 1969. in 2002, the Garden was named after him.
In addition to unique plants, there is another interesting place in the garden – the Methodist Church, which is the oldest building in Darwin. At first, it was located in another part of the city. But since there was a new development planned, it was decided to save the temple, but move it to the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens. There it still stands.
