Winemaking in Australia is an important part of the country's economic, agricultural, cultural, and tourist life. Australian producers have long ago unlocked the potential of their unique land and perennial vines, winning a well-deserved place under the sun on the world wine scene. Their drinks have unquestionably won the hearts of consumers around the world. In 2001, the «National Wine Centre of Australia» was established in Adelaide to pool knowledge, experience, and skills gained over the years to share with the public and to further develop the local wine industry among like-minded people.

Today, the community center dedicated to Australian wine has become a major landmark in the city and country. It is home to the most important national wine companies as well as numerous exhibition, tasting and educational spaces, conference rooms, bars, restaurants, and cellars.

The «Centre» is located next to the Botanic Gardens and University Campus on the North Terrace, which links Adelaide's business and residential districts. Its modern building stands out among the rest of the city's buildings. The wooden arches, curves, and partitions are reminiscent of the oak barrels in which outstanding wines are infused. And the tamped earth walls echo the local soil that feeds the ancient vineyards. The intricate building is decorated both inside and out with elements of wood, metal, and glass – materials that are traditionally used in the world's winemaking industry. The building has received numerous architectural awards for its striking design and innovative use of natural light and has been nationally acclaimed.

You don't have to travel all over the country to take a fascinating and unforgettable journey through the world of Australian wine. You can start by taking a Wine Discovery Journey, an interactive guided tour that immerses visitors in the history and heritage of the local wine industry. Visitors are introduced to Australian terroirs and producers, watch documentaries and explore three-dimensional holograms. After the tour visitors are welcomed to the bar, where they can taste 120 interesting Australian wines from more than 65 wine regions of the country, or to the cellar, where they can purchase rare and collectible vintages of the drink.
