Peter Lehmann is an Australian winemaking legend who saved the Barossa Valley from the seemingly inevitable collapse of the wine industry. Thanks to this, he earned the immodest but justified title of Baron of the Barossa among local producers. Today, one of the most famous family wineries in Australia operates under the brand name «Peter Lehmann» where lovers and connoisseurs of quality wine from all over the world always strive to get.
The Barossa Valley, located eighty kilometers northeast of the city of Adelaide, has long been recognized as one of the greatest wine regions in the country and the world. Its hilly fields are home to some of the oldest vines in the world, dating back to the 1940s and producing glorious wines of the highest class for many years. The rich variety of local soils gives the drinks a distinctive flavor and character, and the unique climate creates ideal conditions for growing many grape varieties. But all this great heritage of Australian winemaking would have faded into oblivion if it were not for the business acumen and high moral qualities of Peter Lehmann.
The young man became seriously interested in wine at the age of 17 after the death of his father. In 1947, driven by the need to help his widowed mother, he left school to work at the Yalumba winery where he spent more than 10 years. He spent the next 20 years at Saltram Wines, where he had a conflict of interest with the owner in the late seventies. It was a difficult time for local winemakers because of the large grape surplus in the Barossa Valley. Saltram stopped buying berries from suppliers with whom Lehmann had agreements. The winemaker with 30 years of experience understood that this policy would ruin about 140 small but high-quality grape producers.
Being a man of his word and deed, Peter Lehmann founded his own company, which bought all the unclaimed crops from local farms and saved the outstanding producers of the Barossa Valley. Moreover, the wines he created have been praised by critics and professionals, making the winery one of the most influential and well-known in the country and the world.
