This beautiful atoll is often called the island of Roses. This very beautiful nature reserve, which is inhabited only by animals, is the southernmost point of the United States of America.

Rose Atoll is known by rare bird species: more than 97% of the seabird populations of American Samoa live on Rose Atoll. Twelve species of birds, nesting on the island, are under state protection. Frigates, white terns, reef herons calmly live there. 

Besides, there is located the biggest population of giant mollusks. Other populations have been diminished across the ocean on 98%, and on Rose Atoll they are fully preserved. 

The island is also famous for the keeping of a big number of endangered green turtles, scientists and zoo defenders have been reproducing the population for several years.

Close to the island of Roses there live predatory fish kinds, that is why it is not recommended to swim in these places to avoid accidents.

When tourists get to Rose Atoll for the first time, they are impressed with the magnificence of the local world. There is preserved the nature in its original form, full of diversity and its natural beauty.

The French traveler Louis Claude Desaulces de Freycinet discovered this unusual world in 1819. He named the atoll in honor of his wife, Rosa, who accompanied him in the trip around the world. But the sailors did not land on the island and continued the trip.

The first person coming to the atoll was the American traveler Charles Wilkes. It happened on October 7, 1839.

After that, the island was just the part of the region, then it became an area of the navy defense. And just in 1973, Rose Atoll was considered the nature reserve, the management began to preserve and restore its natural beauty, which attracts thousands of tourists every year nowadays.
