Imagine, you go to a forest to be alone with nature, breathe fresh air and relax from the hustle and bustle of a city. You go along a path, look around, listen to birds singing... Suddenly, the earth rises and someone with a happy smile and a camera jumps out of it – this is a tourist.
Something like this may happen everywhere in the tunnels of Cu Chi (Củ Chi), not far from Ho Chi Minh. The underground passages stretch almost 200 meters from the capital of the country to the border with Cambodia. This memorable amusement, a popular tourist attraction provides bright memories and positive emotions. In the 20th century, it was a strategically important military object: locals hid from the American soldiers underground.
You can experience all the delights of an underground life by going down to the narrow tunnels. When your eyes will adapt to the dim light of the underground, you will see long and dark corridors, warehouses, workshops for repairing weapons, field hospitals, school classrooms, kitchens and even living rooms, located on several floors. During wartime, they accommodated up to 16 thousand people.
The tunnels were dug for 15 years by the Vietnamese partisans and residents of a small village of Cu Chi, which gave the name to the passages. You become impressed by the perseverance and hard work of the Vietnamese even more after you learn about the entire history of underground passages, details of construction and protection of tunnels in the museum. If you want to deeper understand the history and feel like a soldier of the Vietnamese army, then you may shoot with a machine gun in a local shooting range. The main thing here is not your skill and a sharp eye but height. Only lucky small people will be able to shoot.
Cu Chi combines both a calm walk in the forest with benches for relaxation and a full-fledged excursion that immerses you in the history of Vietnam.
