To start exploring the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, you should go to one of the four historical districts of the city. For example, to Hoan Kiem. It is located at the very center of the city and occupies an area of 5 square kilometers around the lake of the same name. This district is literally covered with historical and cultural attractions.
In the northern part of Hoan Kiem, there is the Old Quarter of Hanoi. In the past, it consisted of 36 popular trade streets, where people could walk in search of astonishing goods all day. In this place, fairy-tale fans, high-quality silk, hand-made shoes, items made of silver and wood, rare medicinal herbs and spices were sold. In fact, it is barely possible to list everything that was traded there! A part of trade streets has been preserved as well as the atmosphere of a lively and colorful Asian market. However, today, the Old Quarter is full of curious tourists as well as hotels, cafés and restaurants built especially for them.
There is also something to see in the southern part of Hoan Kiem. There is the French Quarter of Hanoi – one of the most luxurious and fashionable places in the city. In the past, it was inhabited by French colonists. They left a piece of Europe in Asia. This is one of the best places for hiking: beautiful architecture, wide boulevards and relatively calm street traffic – they all create a special charm. For the demanding public, there are the most majestic hotels and exquisite restaurants. For those who prefer a cultural vacation – the Hanoi Opera House, the Vietnam Museum of Revolution and the Vietnamese Women’s Museum.
Of course, the main feature of Hoan Kiem is a lake of the same name, which makes the very center of the district more beautiful. Near the place, there are the main attractions of the capital. For example, Ngok Son temple, Turtle Tower, the Bridge of the Rising Sun and several Buddhist temples. Moreover, the embankment along the lake that is covered under the shades of trees, became a favorite place of recreation among both locals and tourists.
Near Hoan Kiem, there is another famous lake – Ho Tau. It is surrounded by Hanoi Citadel, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace and many other iconic attractions of the city.
