Among the malachite islands of Ha Long Bay, which are surrounded by a sapphire sea, there are many hidden treasures like precious harbors, grottoes and cave lakes. We already know about some of them, but some are only to be discovered in the future.
One of the most popular treasures of Ha Long Bay is Hang Sung Sot Cave. It is located on the island of Bo Hon. This is one of the biggest parts of land at the very center of the bay. Its cave is also relatively big.
Good news for those who suffer from claustrophobia: the height of Hang Sung Sot Cave is 30 meters, and its length is just 500 meters. A trip across the stone town will be short but very interesting. To have more impressions, go to a nearby cave – Trinh Nu – and continue your journey there.
They say, that Hang Sung Sot Cave was discovered by French colonists at the beginning of the 20th century. They were those who gave it a name, which can be translated as «Surprise Cave» – because the cave deeply impressed the discoverers. After a small and barely notable entrance, they found a grotto of astonishing beauty with stalactites and stalagmites of incredible forms and sizes.
Before you reach the entrance to Hang Sung Sot Cave and see what the French people saw more than a century ago, you will have to overcome a small obstacle – go up by one hundred steps staircase, which leads to the cave. Climbing is an inevitable tribute, which you have to pay to see one of the miracles of Ha Long Bay with your own eyes.
Inside, you will find two grottoes reminiscent of ancient stone amphitheaters. They are rather big and can accommodate more than a thousand excited visitors. A part of the cave deepening is filled with small lakes. Their glares are reflected on stone walls making the atmosphere more magical.
