Once, the territory of modern Andijan was occupied by the ancient state of Davan. It is mentioned in the 1st-2nd centuries BC: Chinese chronicles confirm there was a strong Fergana state, famous for its culture, trade and craft workshops. It is not surprising, since Davan was on the way of the Great Silk Road.

The capital of this state was Ershi. During the rule of the Turks in the Middle Ages, this city got a new name – Mingtepa.

The city of Ershi was rich and famous. Local peasants cultivated various grape varieties and made delicious and expensive wine, which was sold to a large number of countries. The Chinese especially appreciated the local horses, which were called «sky horses» for their speed and endurance. There was even a legend that one can ride horses from Ershi to the mythical land of Immortality. By the way, an unusual event occurred here in 104 BC: the Chinese army with more than 60 thousand soldiers attacked Ershi not only to expand the borders of the state but also to capture the hardy horses that were bred in this city.

In addition to the commercial part, Ershi was famous for its religious shrines of that time, including a healing spring. Therefore, Ershi attracted not only merchants who wanted to sell their goods profitably but also pilgrims who wanted to visit the holy places and drink magic water that restored health and gave longevity.

Unfortunately, the city's fame was short-lived. The decline of trade on the Great Silk Road led to the decline of the city of Ershi. The inhabitants left the city. Over time, the sands swallowed up the magnificent buildings.

Today, Ershi is one of the largest archeological complexes in Uzbekistan. Scientific work is constantly carried out here, revealing more and more details of the great history. Archeologists have found unique things here: for example, a vessel with an ornament depicting a «heavenly horse» or a Griffin. The structure of the city itself is also interesting: it consisted of the outer part, the inner city and the citadel as the main building of the settlement.

The archeological complex houses a historical museum, where the main finds are displayed and the image of the ancient city is restored in the form of a beautiful model.
